The "8" cents handstamp was applied at San Francisco to prepaid letters to indicate that the 6c U.S. postage and 2c ship captain's fee had been paid. It is usually found on the cover itself; however, as evidenced by this stamp and one
other part-strike on piece, the marking was inadvertently struck on Missionaries on occasion.
Bottom margin added with frameline painted in, closed tear at right, small thins. Provenance:
