Sale 1284, Lot 620, 1847 Issue:  Mail to Great Britain and Europe5c Red Brown (1). Horizontal pair, right stamp dot in "S" variety, large margins to just in at bottom right, dark shade, worn-plate impression, tied by manuscript "X" cancels, "Alden N.Y. Oct. 1" (1848) manuscript postmark on buff envelope to Liverpool, England, neat "8" pence due handstamp as this was carried on a private steamer during the Retaliatory Period, sender's directive "Via steamer from Boston" and carried on the non-contract steamer Washington Irving owned by Enoch Train & Co., "28 OC 1848 Liverpool Ship" backstamp, some wear and toned spots

VERY FINE. A SCARCE RETALIATORY PERIOD USE OF THE 5-CENT 1847 ISSUE.

The 10c in postage paid the rate from Alden N.Y. to Boston. It was then carried by private ship and the recipient was charged 8 pence.
